Teaching Dance Doesn't Have to Be Intimidating

Group Dance Class

Download our Free Guide to Teaching Dance in Ontario

If dance is the part of the Arts curriculum you never felt trained for, this guide is for you. It’s a short, practical introduction to bringing meaningful movement into your classroom, grounded in Ontario’s Grades 1-8 Arts curriculum.

That curriculum does not recommend formal dance technique at the elementary level, so you don’t need a dance background or any choreography to get started.

1

WHAT THIS IS

A free, 6-page quick-start guide. It is not a dance routine to learn. Inside:

  • Why you don’t have to be a dancer to teach dance

  • A four-question planning lens (Explore, Create, Communicate, Respond) for building any movement lesson. It’s a practical tool inspired by Ontario’s creative process, not an official Ministry framework.

  • One activity you can run in your classroom tomorrow

2

WHO IT'S FOR

  • Elementary classroom teachers (Grades 1-8) who teach dance without a dance background

  • Teachers who aren’t sure where to start or what they’re expected to cover

  • Teachers who worry what to do if students don’t want to dance

  • Educators who want movement to feel meaningful instead of like filler

3

WHAT YOU'LL EXPERIENCE

  • A plain-language read of about ten minutes

  • A simple way to plan around what students explore, create, communicate, and how they respond and reflect

  • A ready-to-use activity built on the elements of dance: body, space, time, energy, and relationship

  • A realistic way to start small, without teaching steps or rehearsing a performance
